The Problem I have with Mainstream Movies

When, say, a Rohit Shetty blow SUVs in the air we, the audience, gets instantly divided into two groups. One group questions about the laws of physics and the other group who advices the first group that it's a movie and anything can happen there. So, which group is actually right? Well, I could never really decide for myself. But why I thought, I couldn't decide? Well both the argument felt equally right to me and equally not so right. Let's talk about the second argument first. So, why am I expecting laws of motion to be adhered as it's just a movie and I should not take things so literally there. It is meant to entertain me and should just be a fun watch. This is the justification we hear about most of the bollywood movies and it's true for Hollywood movies too. Fair enough, I thought. But the question remains the same. Why was I expecting laws of physics to be followed? Did I not know that it's not meant to be taken seriously? Of course I did.

The genre of the movie has confused meanings. It is set in our world. The subject or the protagonist is usually a man who is expected to do extraordinary things in his life. We identify with this character as he is one of us humans. Now coming to the "extraordinary" part, this must be something out of this world. This part is a fantasy fiction. Combining both the parts would make you believe that what you see is amazing and you can do it too, which in turn is not true. Even though you know that it's over the top, your mind tends to buy it. It sells the underlying idea that a person can be this eventful. And that's when it plays with our minds. We, the consumers of such genre create that zone and we live there. We worship such heroes ultimately.

Let's take an example, Vin diesel. I'm sure he's a good actor. But do you admire him for his acting? He might be very well trained and skilled enough to do the action stuff that he does but are you interested in knowing his tactics? There can be various aspects of his personality which are truly inspiring. But what most of us love about him is the idea which he's created through the characters he's played on screen. We got heavily impressed by those characters because they blurr the lines between reality and fantasy, the genre we were talking about. It sets up a false notion of what is cool. We are dying to be accepted by the world. Whatever we find people liking we immediately try to copy that behavior. In our continuous attempt of trying to fit in, this genre sabotages our real self. Instead of looking to real life heroes, we adore these pseudo characters. And often confuse them with the actors who plays them.

So, who's fault is that? I'll be extremely positive and say that the makers might have thought of giving their audiences an adrenaline rush offered by those car chase sequences or that long jump from a hundred story building. And it's our brain which started making more of it. Wait, but thats how it functions. That's how art functions actually. The interpretation always lies in the eyes of the beholder. And so is the answer of our question. We need to break free from this fake universe. We need to say that I want my laws of motion in place. We have to reject what's taking us far from the truth. The real heroes are around us who do not get enough media coverage to have inspired many lost souls. If we are not stuck in this idea of a fantasy world, we'd be much productive, truthful and empathetic in life. In a nutshell, atleast a better human.
